About First Chance

What is First Chance?

As of 2016, 36% of Turkey’s university graduates are currently unemployed (compared to the overall youth 15-24 unemployment rate of 23%). They are more likely to remain unemployed for 6 months or longer (43%) compared to primary and high school graduates (21 % and 26% respectively). If they graduate from one of the many ‘second tier’ state universities, they are even less likely to be employed.

Keeping in mind the ‘21st Century Skills’ framework, the “First Chance” (İlk Fırsat in Turkish) program was designed to increase employability of youth by:

(Training, Talks and Mentorship)

 

First Chance Academy

While participants on the job experience and gain social awareness working in their full time NGO jobs, they also gain new skills knowledge through the First Chance Academy. Over 12 months, each participants gain approximately 200 hours of training and development activities.

  • Technical Skills - Office programs, basic finance, problem solving, time management, professional writing skills, decision making, project management, creative and innovative thinking, diction and public speaking, presentation skills
  • Interpersonal Skills - Stress management, networking, communication, non verbal communication, conflict management, change and diversity management,
  • Special Topics - Trends in new media, career planning, ethics at work, speaking with the press.
  • English- 60-hour English lesson support per participant.

In addition, a specially designed ‘speaker series’ will bring participants together with business and NGO leaders for 2 hour sessions in which speakers will share experiences. This will increase exposure and learning, thus supporting career development of First Chance participants.

The First Chance Academy mentoring program is designed to match participants with mentors who will:

  • Provide guidance on career planning
  • Facilitate networking and learning more about sectors/careers
  • Provide feedback on areas of professional development

First Chance participants were asked to share their needs and expectations from a mentor. This needs analysis, combined with developmental areas identified in the job-fit assessment inventory, were used to match participants to mentors who could best fit their needs.

After attending separate orientation seminars, mentors and participants meet on a monthly basis (minimum). Mentors come from a diverse set of companies (Pegasus, Esas Holding, Egon Zehnder, Boyner, AKFEN) as well as the non profit and academic sector (SALT/Garanti, MEF University, Turkey Chambers of Commerce).

First Chance Mentors

İlk Fırsat katılımcıları STK’lardaki çalışma süreleri boyunca çalışma alanlarıyla ilgili işbaşı eğitimlere katılıp deneyim kazanırken, İlk Fırsat Akademisi kapsamında da kariyer gelişimlerine katkıda bulunacak eğitim ve mentorluk programlarından yararlanıyorlar.

Esas Sosyal tarafından tasarlanarak koordine edilen eğitim programı konularında uzman eğitmenler tarafından hayata geçiriliyor. Program süresi olan 12 ay boyunca akademi kapsamında aşağıdaki beceri gruplarında toplam yaklaşık 150 saat yüz yüze ve online eğitim sunuluyor:

Teknik Beceriler - Ofis programları, temel finans, problem çözme, zaman yönetimi, profesyonel yazışma becerileri, karar verme, proje yönetimi, yaratıcı ve yenilikçi düşünme, diksiyon ve topluluk karşısında konuşma, sunum becerileri,

Sosyal Beceriler - Stres yönetimi, ağ oluşturma, iletişim, beden dili, çatışma yönetimi, değişim ve çeşitlilik yönetimi,

Özel Başlıklar - Yeni medya trendleri, kariyer planlama, işyeri etiği, medyayla konuşma.

Bunlara ek olarak özel olarak kurgulanmış bir dizi söyleşi aracılığıyla katılımcılar iş dünyası, sanat, spor ve STK alanlarında başarılı isimlerle bir araya gelerek deneyimlerinden ilham alma şansına sahip oluyorlar. Söyleşiler İlk Fırsat katılımcılarının kişisel gelişimine deneyim paylaşımı yoluyla katkıda bulunuyor.
